I had the privilege of working alongside Kate Fenske on this fun project, a children’s book titled “Kia’s Great Escape”. If you know Kate, you are familiar with her 40 before 40 project. Write and publish a kids book was on that list. With illustration help from her mother, Patricia Fenske, Kate wrote this wonderful tale of a dog that escapes the house to go play with other animals.
I designed this book, including endpaper illustration and typography. The pages were a little text heavy for a typical children’s book. That problem was circumvented by a two column layout on landscape pages. This allowed for a short line length, speeding readability while giving the appearance of less type.
