Mart DeCo along with Cory Aronec, Kyle Thomas Creative and Lyle Wiens Fabrications collaborated with the Downtown Winnipeg Biz to bring Mini Peg Golf to life.
I have always loved art that has an interactive element. I’m not sure if I’d call these art but there is certainly a sculptural element to them. Visually they have so many pop culture references. When you stand at the front of a Mini Peg Golf hole, ready to drop a ball, you can feel that it resembles a pinball machine. Looking down the playing surface and seeing the 5 holes brings back memories of Skee Ball. From the sides, the shape, paint scheme and numbers evoke soap box derby cars. Yet even with all those references it still looks completely unique and engaging.
The branding was just as much fun to create as the holes themselves. I knew that I wanted to find a great script that had that old school hand painted sign feel. I landed on Viktor Script by OHNO type. This great face is not just a beautiful script but also has an all caps sans serif that pairs with it perfectly.
Overall I’m excited to bring a little bit of fun and whimsy to downtown Winnipeg. Mini Peg Golf combines a little skill with a little chance and is fun for all ages. Hopefully you get a chance to get out there and play.
